MATR is Closing

MATR is Closing

After five intense, mission-driven years, we have made the very hard but responsible decision to close MATR® (Circularful GmbH). The company is now in voluntary liquidation and we are ending mattress sales.

Since 2020, we have worked relentlessly to end mattress waste. We didn’t just build a product, we built a movement.

Together with over 40 pioneering hotels and our trusting B2C customers, we proved circular economy mattresses can work at scale. We helped co-launch Austria’s Mattress Alliance. We were featured as a best-practice example of circular economy in action. We raised funding as female founders in a traditionally conservative industry. And we gave countless hours to education, keynotes, workshops, mentoring and advocacy because the topic mattered.

We are proud of that impact.

Why are we closing?

We started during the pandemic, expecting sustainability adoption and the economy to grow. Instead, B2B sales cycles were slow, hospitality margins got tighter, the economy stagnated and regulatory support was delayed.

We tried multiple strategic paths forward. Ultimately, closing was the most responsible decision.

What happens now?

MATR® mattresses are built to last 10+ years. When their life ends, we recommend working with Loopit, Austria’s first mattress recycling facility, for pickup and material recovery. As a MATR® customer, you can receive a special discounted rate.

While MATR® as a company is closing, the brand and its legacy may continue in new forms (to be determined). We hope to have more news on this soon.

On a personal note from Verena and Michaela:

We want to say thank you 💚  Change does not happen by waiting. It happens because people act, even when timing is imperfect. We acted. And we would do it all over again.

If you’re building something in the circular economy space and need support, we’re only one conversation away.

Thank you for being part of this chapter and helping us to make sleep matter!

With deep gratitude,

Michaela & Verena
